Bro. Joy Ordained Deacon for Allahabad

Bro. Stephen Joy Rodrigues is ordained a deacon for the diocese of Allahabad by Most Rev. Raphy Manjaly, the bishop of Allahabad in St. Joseph’s Cathedral Allahabad during a solemn Eucharistic celebration at 9.30 am on Sunday, August 10, 2014 where another 29 of his companions too were incorporated into the clergy group for the various dioceses of North India.

Born to the Rodrigues family of Joachim and Cicilia in Sacred Heart Church, Madanthyar, Mangalore Diocese, on 17th September 1983, Rev. Joy joined the diocese of Allahabad in 2006 after completion of his graduation. He was sent to Masih Gurukul Varanasi for the initial studies after which he did his spiritual orientation and philosophical studies in St. Xavier’s Regional Seminary, Etmadpur, Agra. Presently he is pursuing his theological studies in St. Joseph’s Regional Seminary, Allahabad since July 2011.

Exhorting the Ordinadis, the Bishop said, “Be passionate for Christ and let your passion be expressed in your humble service to the humanity.” Then the Bishop administered the vow of obedience, prayed over them by laying of hands, offered Bible for breaking the Word and finally gave the kiss of peace and welcomed them into the group of clergy.

There were about 90 priests present from the North Indian Dioceses to witness this great occasion and to pray for the deacons. Bro. Ivan Rodrigues, belonging to the Dominicans, presently in second year theology in Nagpur was present representing the entire family. His paternal uncle, Rev. Fr. George Rodrigues, also a priest of Allahabad diocese, vested him in the Deacon’s garment.

The parishioners of St. Joseph’s Cathedral felicitated all the Deacons with a garland. Later they were also felicitated in the seminary by Rev. Fr. Francis D’Souza, Rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary and the Staff and Seminarians in the presence of the eminent guests. The celebration ended with a sumptuous meal.Bro.
