Sr. Floriana UMI Goes to Eternal Rest

Death visited our dear Sr. Floriana UMI at Mariampur Convent at 7.20 am on June 3rd 2014.

Sr. Floriana Kalayil was born on February 2, 1942 in Vazhakulam, Kothamangalam Diocese, Kerala. She was the 7th child among 3 brothers and 6 sisters born to Mr.  K. V. Mathew & Mrs.  K.V. Mary. After completing her studies she joined the congregation of the UMI Sisters at Kannur on 28th Jan, 1960, was professed on 23rd May, 1963 and Final professed on 23rd May, 1968. Soon after her final profession she came to North India as a missionary. As a trained teacher Sr. Floriana has taught in our schools at Kannur and Trivandrum in South India. Her first posting in north India was at Sacred Convent, Obra where she was a committed teacher. In this capacity she has served the UMI institutions at Renukoot,  Robertsganj, Kathgodam, Mariampur, Bhowali, St. Joseph’s Convent, Kanpur and Mariampur Convent Kanpur. Good at music, singing, dancing and other extra-curricular activities Sr. Floriana had been a skilful and resourceful teacher.

From 2002 onwards she was a member of St. Josephs Convent, Chakeri. She had a fall in 2011 whereby she fractured the neck of the right femur and was cemented Bipolar Hip Athroplasty. Gradually she developed Type 2 Diabetis mellitus with cardio vascular Atropy. As she grew seriously ill she was again admitted in Mariampur Hospital on 28th October 2013.  She was suffering from respiratory disease. Ever since, she has been on continuous treatment at Mariampur Hospital by our physicians and orthopedic doctors. She was discharged and was brought to Mariampur Convent and was under medical care of our sisters from our Mariampur Hospital.

On 2nd June night onwards she grew restless and showed signs of gasping. The following morning soon after the Holy Mass Fr. Sunil Mascarenhas and all the Sisters to Sr. Floriana’s room and prayed for her. Fr. blessed her and all dispersed for breakfast. However, before they could have finished their breakfast Sr. Floriana grew serious and the priest was called again to attend her.  All the Sisters rushed to her room and prayed for her. Soon after the priest prayed over her, all the Sisters stood around her as she breathed her last at 7.20 am.

The diocese of Allahabad treasures the happy memories and the dedicated life and committed service rendered by Sr. Floriana in various parts of the diocese.

The final rites of Sr. Floriana will take place at 7 am in Mariampur Convent on Wednesday 4th June, after which the mortal remains will be laid to rest at Chunniganj Christian Cemetery.
