Centenary Celebration at Queen of the Apostles' Church, Ranipur

Prayagraj, March 23, 2024 – A solemn Eucharistic celebration marked the centenary of Christian presence at Queen of the Apostles Church, Chatham Lines, Prayagraj, in the diocese of Allahabad. The Most Rev. Louis Mascarenhas, the Catholic Bishop of Allahabad, led the special Mass, joined by approximately 30 priests, 75 nuns, and 100 lay faithful at 10.30 am on Sunday.
During his homily, Bishop Mascarenhas paid tribute to the various religious communities that have served the Church over the past century. He expressed deep gratitude to the Franciscans, Italian priests, Pauline priests, Sisters of the Pious Disciples, and, most recently, the Jesuits. He highlighted the Church’s unwavering commitment to serving the sick, the poor and youth.
The Pauline priests, who played a crucial role in pastoral and social services, were commended for their work in printing, youth ministry through Teenager and Yuva Sangam, and their contributions to Sunday liturgies and inspirational literature under Atmonnati Prakashan. Late Rev. Fr. Leo Vecchor SSP was especially remembered for his long 30 years of service as the parish priest.
Despite a century of service, the Church remains a small but dedicated community, with around 30 active members. Bishop Mascarenhas emphasized that conversion was never the goal; rather, the Church has always focused on compassion and service.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, the Bishop unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the centenary. A felicitation program ensued, beginning with a prayer dance and the traditional lighting of the lamp. Mrs. Roseline shared her experiences, followed by fond memories were shared by Fr. Joby Mathew SSP, Provincial of the Society of St. Paul; Fr. Jose Thayil SJ, Acting Provincial of Jesuits Patna Province; and Fr. Soosaimani SJ, Jesuit Provincial of Delhi. Bishop Mascarenhas also addressed the gathering and facilitated the Jesuits and parishioners for their faith. The Brothers from St. Joseph’s Seminary rendered a felicitation song, and the program concluded with a vote of thanks from Fr. Rajendra Francis SJ, the Parish Priest. He commended the youth for playing a key in the celebrations.
The event was a testament to a century of faith, service, and dedication, ensuring that the legacy of Queen of the Apostles Church continues for generations to come.
